BYD Battery Box – Truly Modular Solar Energy Storage

The BYD Battery Box is a modular solar battery manufactured by global tech giant BYD which is an acronym for Build Your Dreams. Originally starting off as a manufacturer of vehicle batteries they quickly expanded in the early 2000’s to start producing a massive range of electric vehicles ranging from standard electric cars through to industrial transport and even the famous double decker buses across London.

Given their expertise in the field their entry into the solar battery market makes a lot of sense. Their success came not only from innovation but the resilient nature of their products and while we expect to see many more big names entering the ever growing solar storage sector BYD brought with it decades of experience and the same performance and safety standards that saw them become the largest EV manufacturer in the world.

This pedigree can be seen amongst the listed stats for the BYD solar battery range. The depth of discharge is at or very much near to 100% across their products which means more value in terms of total power cycles before degradation kicks in. The peak output current is also extremely impressive and while the figures vary depending on total power stored even at the lowest end it surpasses the vast majority of batteries on the market.

BYD Battery Box – Plug and Play Modular Expansion

We covered the sungrow solar battery recently which is also touted as a modular design however the BYD Battery Box range is truly modular when it comes to expansion. Depending on what model you go for your Battery Box will be composed of anywhere from 2 to 8 individual battery modules that are connected in a series to provide between 5.12 kWh and 22.08kWh of usable energy.

When it comes to expanding the total amount of stored energy you have 2 options. The first is to simply add more battery modules to your existing box. Due to the design of the Battery Box this option requires little work as the modules are “plug and play” which means it will simply slot on top of the already existing modules with no additional wiring needed.

For larger expansions you can add up to 3 identical additional battery boxes via a direct parallel connection should you wish to double or triple the amount of storage available. This flexibility makes the BYD Battery Box a great choice in terms of future proofing your power draw needs. Solar batteries are not cheap and the ability to incrementally add more via the modules is exceptional consumer value.

BYD Solar Batteries Have Excellent Compatibility

Another feature of the BYD Battery Box range is their compatibility with a wide range of commonly used inverters. This is very important for us as it makes them one of the best choices for those looking to add a battery to an already existing solar power setup. Among the many inverter brands that the BYD solar batteries are compatible with are SMA, Fronius, Goodwe, Sungrow and Victron.

Depending on the inverter you can enable DC coupling to your solar for blackout backup power as well as being able to AC couple. It is due to this that the battery is rated for on grid, on grid plus backup and off grid use. Flexibility is a theme when it comes to the BYD Battery Box and this is greatly appreciated by both installers and consumers.

The chemistry is cobalt free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) which is pretty much standard for batteries due to its stability and therefore safety. The usage of LFP gives BYD solar batteries a great life cycle and power output. The range is also manufactured to high safety standards and certifications such as VDE2510-50 / IEC62619 / CE / CEC / UN38.3

BYD Battery Box Warranty And Support

The BYD Battery Box comes with a 10 year performance warranty which has become the industry standard. The warranty states the battery will retain 60% of its usable energy at 10 years from the invoice date or for a minimum energy output of 42.7 megawatt hours. Note that the Battery Box range of BYD solar batteries are not rated for outdoor use.

BYD also has established offices in Australia which is key for quick and easy support. While this is more of a plus for installers like us it does mean you can expect a quicker turnaround should something go wrong. It also demonstrates their commitment to the Australian market and this is a net positive for everyone.

Additionally, direct parallel connection of up to 3 identical Battery-Box Premium HVS allows a maximum capacity of 38.4 kWh. Ability to scale by adding HVS modules or parallel HVS stacks later.

One Battery Box Premium HVM is composed of 3 to 8 HVM battery modules that are connected in series to achieve a usable capacity of 8.3 to 22.1 kWh. Additionally, direct parallel connection of up to 3 identical Battery Box Premium HVM allows a maximum capacity of 66.2 kWh. Ability to scale by adding HVM modules or parallel HVM stacks later.

BATTERY-BOX PREMIUM LVS

The BYD Battery-Box Premium LVS is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack for use with an external inverter. A single Battery-Box Premium LVS contains between 1 to 6 battery modules LVS stacked in parallel and can reach 4 to 24.0 kWh usable capacity in one tower. Connect up to 16 Battery-Box LVS 16.0 in parallel for a maximum size of 256 kWh.
