Sungrow Solar Batteries: Affordable Solar Energy Storage

Sungrow, one of the world’s largest PV manufacturers, has introduced a new range of solar batteries aimed at providing a cost efficient solution for the solar energy storage market. The new range of products, which includes a hybrid inverter, features a SBR lithium iron phosphate battery with varying storage capacity. But in an ever expanding market how do Sungrow solar batteries stand up and set themselves apart from the competition?

The SBR range of Sungrow batteries uses a cathode material called LiFePO4, or lithium iron phosphate. Batteries composed of this material are typically considered low cost, incredibly stable over long term use and have a low toxicity. It is for these reasons, alongside it’s well defined performance, that LiFePO4 is seeing more and more use in solar energy storage products.

Sungrow Solar Batteries Are Designed With Flexibility In Mind

In order to provide flexibility to the range Sungrow has designed their SBR series of batteries using a modular framework so consumers can find the right capacity to suit their needs and budget. Storage capacity starts at 9.6kWh for a 3 module battery, increasing all the way to 25.6kWh at the top end for 8 modules.

Those looking at the data sheet for the Sungrow SBR series will instantly note the depth of discharge (DoD) listed for each module is 100%. While we covered the most commonly used terms for solar batteries in our recent overview, DoD is the measurement of usable storage compared to total storage capacity.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Solar Battery

Just because a battery can hold a certain amount of charge doesn’t mean you can use it all without damaging the battery. With a DoD of 100% you can rest easy knowing you are getting the most value possible out of your solar battery. Another great advantage a high DoD gives you is a longer lifespan as a battery has a limited amount of cycles it can perform before deterioration reduces its efficiency dramatically.

The entire range has a continuous charging / discharging current of 30 A and features a nominal voltage of between 192 – 512 V. Safety is key with over / under voltage protection, overcurrent protection and a DC breaker all baked in to keep everyone safe. This is something we look for when it comes to choosing what products to stock.

Sungrow Solar Batteries Are Built For Australian Conditions

Batteries perform differently depending on the ambient temperature with too low or too high temperatures limiting performance and shortening the lifespan of the battery. When it comes to charging the optimal range for the SBR series is 0-50 degrees celsius. This is ideal for use in Australia where temperatures will almost never fall below 0 during the day.

Discharging temperature ranges extend to -30 with the same top end of 50. While it gets a bit muggy here at certain times of the year the allowable relative humidity range of between 0-95% means we see no negative impacts coming from that metric. All of these factors combine to make the SBR range of solar batteries by Sungrow incredibly resilient and that is important for a market such as Australia.

The entire range comes with a 10 year performance warranty for peace of mind which is pretty much standard for the industry. More batteries can be added in parallel to expand the amount of energy storage with a maximum of 4 units connected together. This means you can get up to a staggering 100 kWh of power storage using the 8 module units.
