Global Solar Solutions have been working with rugby legend Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins to upgrade and expand his off-grid solar system. For those not familiar with the term off-grid, it means that Nick’s home is entirely powered by his own renewable energy sources located on his property and in this case that source is solar.

While this may seem a tad daunting to some the reality is remote areas can have less than reliable power networks so ensuring you have access to your own stable power source means less headaches down the road. As solar has become so accessible in the recent years we are seeing more and more people take up off-grid including those in suburban or built-up areas.

Components Used In Nick’s Off-Grid System

RedEarth Troppo Solar Battery

For the best possible solar storage solution we turned to our good friends over at RedEarth Energy Storage. Their Aussie made “Troppo” solar battery uses Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) which is considered to be the safest lithium-ion chemistry. Their modular approach to design means we can expand storage easily as needed down the line.

Each Troppo battery comes embedded with their latest Battery Management System (BMS) and is maintenance free. The SmartSolar charge controller delivers power gathered by your solar panels to the battery bank using the latest technology on the market. It is able to maximise the amount of energy you can harvest which gives you the shortest possible charge time. It can even charge a battery that has been severely depleted provided it has not been damaged in the process.

The SmartSolar charge controller utilises Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to completely optimise your solar panel’s ability to gather energy. It monitors both the voltage and current output of your panels, making adjustments to increase your harvest when the sky is clouded or even partial shading at different times of the day.

When you add in the ability to remotely monitor and control the SmartSolar controller via bluetooth pairing with your smartphone, the advantages of using this incredible device just keep stacking up.

Victron Quattro Hybrid Inverter

The Victron Quattro is both an inverter and charger, making it a swiss army knife of sorts for this installation. It also features incredible versatility in the form of multiple system integration features including three or split phase as well as parallel operation. The Quattro is packed with additional features that only increase its viability in an already crowded market.

A big feature of the Quattro is the fact it has two AC inputs as well as two AC outputs with automatic connection to the active source.
